The College of the Desert

Project Description
The College of the Desert’s New 14,280 SF Nursing and Health Services Science Building is located in the Desert Community College District, Palm Desert, California and consists of the following two buildings:

  • Administration and Computer Classrooms:           9,209 SF
  • Classrooms and Skills Labs:                                  5,071 SF

The mechanical systems include a custom design and Manufactured Main Air Handler Unit MAH-1 and split systems cooling unit, also thirteen VAV hot water type reheat terminal units, and six exhaust fans with back draft dampers. There are 22 zones and each includes individual thermostat control and interface to a central campus network EMS system. Individual spaces are capable of being controlled during off-hours for up to 4-hours and to be programmed at different schedules, startups, and set backs to accommodate a variety of building area operational requirements. Sound attenuation traps are installed in air ducts and registers to reduce noise due to air supply and return air flow paths.

Electrically, the electrical service requirements and power distribution is sufficient to meet building lighting, mechanical, and spaces future connected plug loads.
Regarding lighting systems there is interior automatic day-lighting and occupancy sensor controls, also exterior lighting controlled by directional roof mounted photocell, with automatic programmable time clock, and building lighting shut-off automatic time switch for each lighting zone. The lighting system consists of energy efficient daylight dimming fixtures throughout the building. In terms of the Building Startup / Shutdown sequence the building daily startup and shut down sequence is to utilize automatic controls and requires minimal hands-on operations by building staff. Most of all systems are automatic controls based.
